Total Newbie who's on a budget and got sucked into Amazon Hammocks

Have a look at woot.com. They have sales on Yukon Outfitters and Twisted Root hammocks all the time. The sales are not always going on but return often. Both are decant hammocks. Another option would be, of all places, Wally World. They have a very nice Equip Travel Hammock 2 person for just under $30. and an Equip mosquito hammock for just under $40. I have both of these Wally World Equip hammocks and my wife uses a Yukon Outfitters mosquito hammock. The quality and fit and finish of the Equip is incredible. Especially the mosquito hammock. Best of all, they have a satisfaction guarantee policy. If you do not like it, return it. Just a thought for someone on a tight budget.

Make sure to get a hammock at least 11 feet long--no matter who sells it.

My suggestion.....from Dutchware.
*11 netless hammock
*Bottom Entry bugnet...option to use it or not.
*Get your suspension from Dutch too...straps or whoopies. Your choice.
You'll be set and happy and Dutch has right good customer support.

As others have said in the long run you would be better off with a cottage vendor. That being said I started with a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beater with integrated bug net for $50 from Amazon. It came with ropes that you wrap around the tree and then tie a knot in the rope which you would then hook the suspension into. Needless to say it was a little difficult to fine tune the angle. So after the first trip I bought a set of atlas tree straps which was a lot better. But other than that it worked okay. The following year I bought a Warbonnet Blackbird which made a world of difference but I still have the skeeter beater. So yes a cheap hammock might be okay but you are probably going to end up putting at least a little more money into it than you think. Also don't forget to check the for sale forum here. Plus some of the vendors from time to time have some discounted merchandise due to a cosmetic imperfection or patched hole. I've bought a couple of items from Warbonnet that way and have to look hard to find the imperfection.

Wouldn't this be more expensive than getting the half wit with the 5' whoopies/straps and come with a bug net option? You seem to be extremely knowledgeable about the subject

I'm sure Shug will chime in, but the question is one of flexibility. A half wit is a wonderful creation for a few specific scenarios as part of a hammock "portfolio." It is optimized for minimal weight for times when you need a bug net and will be wearing long pants. Will there be times in winter when you don't want a bug net? Will there be times in summer where it is so hot you want to lay in your hammock in shorts and need a full bug net? The config listed by Shug provides a lot of flexibility for the least overall costs (not having to have multiple hammocks).

I guess theoretically I don't need the bug net yet since bugs aren't really around yet...so I could go that route and get a bug net later on when money is available

Exactly. Don't need a tarp either. Just pick and choose your nights for experimenting.
