    Hello from Oregon!

I am really new to this. I honestly didn't even know backpacking or hammocking were things that people did until a couple months ago. I have now gone on three backpacking trips, one in a one man tent, one in a hammock, and one in a shelter. I have always loved car camping and sleep really well outdoors, but that is probably because of my twin sized airmatress and costco 'big man' sleeping bag. I have absolutely loved my backpacking trips and can't wait to go out again. I have borrowed all my gear from my boyfriends family so far(I'm lucky that they are gear hoarders and buy stuff that lasts a long time). The trip that I spent in the hammock has definitely been my favorite, so much so that I have chosen that as the sleep system that I am investing in. I finally got all my new gear in the mail and can't wait to set it up in my yard to try out, too bad I'm really sick right now, or I'd be out there instead of on here. For now I can only afford a sleeping pad and mummy bag for insulation. I'm going to save up for an underquilt and topquilt, so that I can get a really nice down set up. I found out about Shug's videos from here and absolutely love them (Thank you hammock forums for helping me waste even more of my life watching youtube videos) I'm really disappointed that I couldn't get set up in time for the annual yeti hang this year, I don't know anyone that is a hammock camper and would love to get to know some other people. If anyone has any suggestions of where to hang, I'd love to hear them!

Thank you so much! I've been trying to keep a positive outlook because I had to go with really budget options. I've tried to search for suggestions from this site and no one even remotely suggested anything that I could afford. I can't wait until I have all of my college debt paid off and can afford all the awesome gear that costs an arm and a leg!

Hello and welcome from Marietta GA.

Take it from me, there's nothing wrong with budget gear. I sleep just as comfortably in my table cloth hammock as Shug does in his Warbonnet, or Chameleon, or whichever other hammock in his fleet he decides to use.

There's nothing wrong with going "on the cheap" and there's nothing wrong with going expensive. It's all about A. what you can afford and B. what you want.
Take your time, educate yourself, and make good gear choices. Happy hanging!

I'm hoping that I made good choices that I can eventually recommend to others.

Hello from Portland! Hammock camping is great here in the PNW, doesn't matter how much rain is falling!

I bought a larger tarp than I probably need just for that reason.
