    Indoor wall hanging

Hi all, just joined the forums Thursday, Just bought my first hammock yesterday, dreaming up all kinds of crap today!

So the little time I've spent in my new ENO lounging around the front and back yards and from the basement support poles has convinced me that Hammocks and myself are going to have a long history together. My girlfriend and I have been having a problem deciding what to do in a spare room in our house, a small library was discussed and wouldn't you know the room is exactly wide enough to hang an ENO from some eye-screws from wall to wall, with great window light close by. What better way to lounge and read than in a hammock?

So I tried the search feature but it was a little overwhelming. I'm also not savvy with construction type stuff, so here are my questions and ideas:

Is a high strength eye screw drilled into a wall stud that is behind drywall going to leave me crashing to the ground? Something in my gut says YES.. the house was built in the 50's so it's not new wood by any means. Could I however disperse the weight of the hammock over multipul studs by mounting a 2X8 cut to length of 2-3 studs and screwing the 2X8 TO the studs with heavy duty screws, then putting the eye screw or bolt that would hang the hammock directly in the middle of the 2X8? The reason I want a 2X8 specifically is more space to drill multiple screws for mounting and enough space to possibly paint some artistic images to keep the board from being an eye-sore and letting it actually pull the room together.

So eye-screw in wall stud good? Dispersing weight between multiple studs good? I'd rather not get an indoor frame quite yet.

    Thanks all!

I have seen the 2x8 suggestion before as a more secure option.

Yes, the 2x8 would be the best way to distribute the weight across the walls plus you could add a shelf across the top to hold all your hammocking tid-bits your going to be acquiring in the near future especially if you DIY. My house is older to and I would and have used a single stud but I know what they look like from remodeling projects here, ask any ?s, lots of help here..

A much debated topic. Many have successfully hung with just an eye screw but the safer option is dispersing the load across multiple studs with a 2x as you mention.

To me the risk with the eye screw isn't hitting the floor, it's possible damage to the house framing and walls.

Sounds great, I'll move forward with this in a week or two and take pictures of the results :-)

Take a look at Pedro's pad eye post at http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=10084. Pics on page 2. Distributes load over two smaller diameter screws per attachment, so it's more secure and less likely to damage the studs. Probably more expensive than the 2x4's, but IMO looks a lot nicer.

If you go this route make sure you use cast pad eyes. The ones I'm using (http://www.bosunsupplies.com/product...roduct=S3704-5, S3705-X001) are rated at 1000 pounds each and feel completely secure in my 1980s studs.

    How about this:

lean a 4x4 up against two walls (floor to ceiling)

now at the bottom on the floor - jam a 2x4 between them.

Do the same up higher, maybe where you will put eye screws, or as high as the ceiling.

screw in eye screws at desired height.
    Hang Hammock

You would likely want to fasten the 2x4's to the 4x4s
maybe with a small plate on either side and fasten the 4x4's to the wall with a couple of screws or angle brackets.

    Just figurin'

I like this idea but what prevents you from falling sideways, unless I missed where the 4x4s are attached to the wall?

What you're proposing should work but to me it wouldn't look too good in a room. My goal is to hang indoors with minimal visual impact and no damage to my home. That way my wife is happy, so I'm happy.
