NY > Dabes Diversion & Virgil Mountain Loops>3-17 Mar 2017 - James Kennedy State Forest

Hey all. I had a great time on the Interloken Trail in February, so I want to open up another trip for folks to join if interested.

We will be going over to the James Kennedy State Forest and hiking the Dabes Diversion Loop and the Virgil Mountain Loop. The total mileage between two days will be approximately 8.8 miles

Any who would like to join the baseline itinerary will be as follows...

    • - the hike will begin at 2:00PM on Friday (3/17) at the shoulder parking where Hauck Hill Rd Meets Bleck Rd (42.488807, -76.177446)
    • - Hike the Dabes Diversion Loop Trail to camp
    • - Camp at the Fox Fire Lean-to Friday Evening (42.4729, -76.1788)
    • - Leave for the trail from the lean-to no earlier than 9:00AM on Saturday (3/18)
    • - Hike the Finger Lakes/North Country Trail until it meets up with the Virgil Mountain Loop (42.481120, -76.161204)
    • - Follow the Virgil Mountain Loop north
    • - Lunch on top of Greek Peak (42.500990, -76.153223)
    • - Return to parking by approximately 3:00-4:00PM

    - Food will be every person for themselves.

There appear to be sufficient water sources throughout the hike with the exception being the mountains themselves. If anyone on here is familiar with these loops, let us know what to expect.

I live about 10 minutes from James Kennedy State Forest and this trail system/network. I've hiked this area countless times, including in a foot of snow earlier this winter. Overall, it's a great set of trails and Foxfire Lean-to sits in a great location just inside the woods (state land) from an open farm field (private property) with expansive views of the valley south of Dryden. Should be plenty of suitable trees in the immediate vicinity and extending a bit uphill of Foxfire.

Hike will offer some good variety in forest-type and elevation with some moderate up-and-downs. You may encounter some soft/muddy terrain closer to Virgil Mountain, but not nearly as bad as Finger Lakes National Forest (in my experience). Decent views from Virgil Mt, if you move off trail a bit towards Greek Peak ski area, otherwise there's some open views along the power line cut on the eastern edge of the loop trail.

Unfortunately, I work on Friday until 5:30 pm and on Saturday, from 12:30 to 9 pm, so I'm unlikely to attend. Maybe I could hike in Friday night and back out in the morning. We shall see.

I'm open to questions or concerns.

Wish I could go. I'll be going to Detroit to see the Sabres play the Red Wings at the Joe. Next time!
