    Sleeping pads for the Amok

    Greetings from NC!

I just received my new Amok and Tarp system. After my morning coffee, I shot out to the backyard to set it up for testing.

Side note: I paid close attention to the setup instructions and it's a breeze to hang this sucker! I kinda glossed over the instructions for actually getting into the hammock, though. I should've grabbed the ridge line and eased myself into the Amok, but I just sorta sat down like it was a recliner. In an instant, that sucker flipped me out the back on my noggin! Ha!

Now back to the reason for my post:

I purchased one of the recommended sleep pads on the Amok web site. I opted for the Thermarest Basecamp AF. Good choice for a sleep pad, but it seems too big for the Amok, even after letting out some of the air. In the pics attached to this post, you'll notice that the foot end of the Amok is curled up a bit.

My question for the group: Have any of you "Amokers" experienced the same scenario with "sleep pad" curl? I welcome any suggestions you may have. Thanks much!

I've had the same issue using an Exped Synmat 9LW. It creates a strain on my knees by hyperextending them. I haven't found a way around it yet. I believe I brought it up in the Kool Aid drinker Amok thread. I haven't had the chance to try again because of an injury but hope to test more in a few weeks. Hope you find a resolution.

Yes, that adds a different feel. I'm spending the afternoon laying here reading and adjusting the straps. Adding tension to the "knee" straps helped a bit. Thanks!

Try out a couple of levels of inflation. My sweet-spot is around 90% [on a ES-9LW]
Also~ check your side straps to assure that they are mirrors of each other. Mine came with one pair reversed. Made a big difference.

I slept in my Amok last night. It is very comfortable, but you have to get the tensioners adjusted properly for a comfortable lay. With the leg area tensioners loosened all the way, the Amok had me tilted with my feet too low. To alleviate that, I tightened them up about half-way. With the upper tensioners loosened all the way, I got a nice flat lay.

The bug net has adjustments too! I put some tension on the head end so that it pulled the net out of my face. That was nice.

I think my sleeping pad is sub-optimal for the Amok because it would bunch up in the middle, right under my lower back, when I changed positions. I'm using one of the recommended pads: Thermarest Basecamp AF Large. I think I will try the Exped SynMat 7 LW, although I hate spending another $120 on my setup. If that pad doesn't work, I may have to take advantage of the return policy.

Side note: The folks at Amok Equipment have been providing me with great support via email. They're a great company and I wish them all the best.

I've got the Exped SynMat 9 LW in mine, and it's pretty great

unlike a lot of others, I like mine (so far) pumped as full as I can get it

I am almost exclusively a stomach sleeper tho
