Howdy, I decided to lighten my load this year and my sleep system was my first step. Last fall I did a 3 day 2 night backpack trip around these parts http://www.protrails.com/trail/572/o...park-deer-lake
Half way through my friend hurt her knee and I quickly realized after I had to carry both packs to our second destination, that #1, she had too much stuff, #2, I needed better rain pants, and last but not least, all the extra stuff I had "just in case" really was hurting more than helping me. There came a time during the trek that I regretted not spending a few extra dollars for the lighweight version, and I told myself when I got home I had to do something drastic to make my experience more enjoyable.
I also boondock and finding a spot for my 2 person Kelty has never been an easy task.
I dont know anyone that hammock camps, so this is very new to me, I have only hung in my cotton hammock in the back yard so I googled, found some videos on youtube I can relate to (shug), binge watched almost all of them. Three days later I had a superfly, blackbird, and suspension from Dutch headed to me.
I cleared out some snow from the crazy storm we had last week and pitched my tarp so I could fail fast in my yard and not on the trail, got my trekking poles out and rigged up guy lines, figured out where to put what and how much to tension. Also knots, love em, tied me some good ones I haven't used in ages, feel like a smart trucker now.
My gear weight is down to 16 lbs from 28. Hammock and top/underquilt saved me 4lbs on my sleepsystem alone. It motivated me to press on and lighten my cook kit, clothing, etc.
I have a lot of questions and I hope to get them answered here!
