    Lightbulb Flattest Lay

    Hey all,

I'm relatively new to the hammock camping game, but I practice setting up in the park regularly. Just did my first overnight (with a backup tent in case I really couldn't handle it) and in spite of all my messing around with the ridgeline and the height of the suspension etc, I was unable to get a truly flat lay. I have upper back issues and this is somthing I need to address if I'm going to be sleeping in a hammock instead of a tent.

I currently have what I presume is the starter hammock of an ENO double nest. I made my own ridgeline that is 83", which I thought would get me pretty flat, but it did not What did I do wrong? (besides the underquilt, I realized that was not tight enough pretty quickly. Heh.)

I'd love to hear about hanging suggestions/tips and/or what the best hammocks are for getting a very flat lay.

Sleep on an angle and raise your hammock footend 12 to 18 inches may help.
    Carry forth.

How long is an Eno Doublenest? 83" seems kind of short for a ridgeline, it should be about 83% of the hammocks length.

ENO says it's 112", so you're right, it is too short. Weirdly it felt like it was too long. I originally made the ridgeline for a singlenest and assumed they were the same length. One of these days I'll learn to always measure.

Was definitely not aware of the uneven hang idea. I'll try it out next time I set up. Thank you! Love your videos, the underquilt adjustment one was so helpful.

    How tall are you?

I'm only 5'4" and have my share of physical ailments including arthritis in the thoracic spine. I can't get truly comfortable in anything less than 11'.

That said, Shug's suggestions are always a good starting point.

    I'm 5'3" -- I have issues hanging at a reasonable height if the trees aren't close :P

I know that one all too well. Maybe we can get Trump to sign an EO declaring that every tree should have a yuuge rope ladder hung in it! Barring that, maybe an adutchable/hugger about 14-18" off the ground with a loop big enough to step into would work. Hmmm...Hey I'm gonna try that!

What squidmark says--get an 11 foot or longer hammock--mine is 12 feet long by 6 feet wide--very comfortable--it feels like one of those recliners that lays all way back--not 100% flat but close enough.

For absolute flat lay there are bridge hammocks--I never tried a bridge as I'm happy with gathered end. There are also hammocks turned 90 degrees--their names escape me--they are mainly flat.
