Allagash River Trip in August - New Hammock Camper

    Hello Everyone,

This post serves as my intro to the forums, I've been lurking a bit and learning a lot and for that I thank you!

I'm a pretty new Hammock Camper and Camper in general really. This past Summer I got an invite to join a group on a 5 day Canoe trip down the Allagash River in Maine in August, I had never been camping outside of my backyard before so I accepted the challenge and immediately started reading online to figure out what I needed to know for the trip.

A couple of the guys camp with hammocks and that sounded pretty cool to me, so I headed in that direction. As most people probably do, I immediately bought some of the "wrong" gear, and luckily found this forum, ditched the $20 amazon hammock I had just purchased and got myself a sweet 11' netless in 1.0 hexon with cinch buckles from Dutch. At the time I also made the decision to get the Grand Trunk Mozzy net to protect me from bugs and keep critters away from my stuff, the Grand Trunk rainfly, and a eno ember 2 quilt to help with CBS.

The trip was amazing, the river water level was nice and high so it wasn't too rough, and most of the camps along the river provided three hammock campers with plenty of options. I swear the trip changed my life, I've been bit by the bug, have taken my son camping a few times since now, and my pile of gear keeps growing(I swear I have everything I need now, well maybe one more thing). I definitely recommend this trip if you can make it happen and am happy to answer any questions about it.

On the gear side of things I've been making some improvements, again thanks to you all and the information you share here (and special thanks to people like Shug who have such great informative youtube videos and Dutch who's producing amazing gear), I have hammock gear top and bottom quilts on order, am registered in kickstarter as a backer for Dutch's chameleon, and am hoping to pick up a used Warbonnet Superfly to round out what I think will be a perfect setup.

Here's a few pictures from the trip

    Thanks,
    Murph

Welcome from another hammock paddler. Nothing better than time on the water and in the trees to restore your soul & fuel your spirit.

Looks awesome! We've done an annual kayak trip down the Saco in Maine and NH every year. Dates haven't been picked yet for this year.

Thanks, and if you all have any tips for a new camper I'm grateful for them. I'm on the southeast coast of Massachusetts, so any good suggested hang spots around here are appreciated as well!

Very nice pics you must have a decent quality camera as it shows in some of the pics. Looks like a fun trip. How were the skeeters ?

Thanks! Amazingly the pics are from my galaxy S7, which I bought mainly for the camera. The blood suckers varied greatly from camp to camp, we tried to stick to the camps with faster moving water and that helped a bit. We did camp at one spot where the water was pretty still and encounter both skeeters and leeches. Between the fire and our bug nets it wasnt too bad.

Ah, thanks. I have the S7 and always using my GoPro Silver but I'm tired of the wide angle on all my pictures so I may have to give the S7 a try. Thanks for the info.
