Why not just a ski mask? You'll look like you want to rob a bank but it covers everything but the tip of your nose and eyes.

I've had great success with the "hot shot" balaclava from Northern Tools for around $5 - $7. I've used it around neck only, up around the ears & overhead, or full-face coverage with only my eyes & nose uncovered.

If I could find this exact thing in fleece I'd by it. Mine only covers the head and optionally the mouth.

Yea ... No. I look weird enough when I backpacking I do not need to scare the masses any more.

Used a turtle fur Balaclava until I experienced temperatures below 20 hanging with condensation where I was breathing out through the fleece. Down hood by Luke's Ultralite has fixed this.

I use a silk balaclava. I tried a mask that covers mouth and nose and velcro's behind the neck, but it kept slipping. If it is really cold I can pull the balaclava up over my mouth an nose. I might also use a down hood. At those temperatures frost is also an issue. I use a sock and keep it unzipped by my head. I would probably be find if I could back that up with a tarp, but the supports outside the house are located where staking a tarp would be impractical.

I like the Wiggy's Insulated Head Cover. I haven't had any condensation issues with it and it is very warm. Usually I have a fleece beanie on as well.
