    Double-Layer Hammock with internal underquilt?

I'm about to start making a gathered-end hammock and considering insulation options.
Has anyone considered making a double-layered hammock but leaving a fair bit of room between the layers and inserting an under-quilt between the two layers?
Obviously you'd need to judge it finely to make sure the UQ is held in place while not being compressed.
This would allow for a much wider range of materials (and simpler manufacturing) for the UQ.
For example, I could take an old sleeping bag, cut it to size, seal it back up and it's ready to go.

    Thoughts?

You would be better off making a Wooki clone or just sew some differential baffles directly onto the hammock if you want to go this route.

Here's someone who's tried it before -- he did 2 synthetic versions and a down version and you can read about his ideas:

Its an interesting idea but to get just the right amount of gap between the layer especially with the pressure on the fabric on a angled lay will be very difficult indeed, i am not sure its even possible unless you cut some pretty strange shaped hammocks.

This might be possible on a 90 deg lay hammock.

At that point your 2nd layer is effectively an attached under-quilt protector, if I'm reading this correctly.

and/or you're making a built in Garlington Insulator

Wooki copy is far far simpler

I am working on one as we speak and will stuff it with down by the weekend.

Others said it - and I need to read the links provided above - but it seems to do it right it would be practically impossible - that is to have the same pretty much loft from head to foot

This would work OK if you used something that didn't compress as your insulation...Like sleeping pad or wool blanket or maybe fleece jacket. Climashield would loose a lot of r value but would still work a little bit I think.

I also read it this way, the second layer seems to be a close fitting UQP. I thought the idea of a GI was a bunch of crumpled up space blankets that remain lofted?

This is not the same as the Wooki, really depends on the OPs intent. You could cut and rig suspension on half of a sleeping bag without any additional layers, and then put an UQP beneath that, or you could ditch the suspension and sew the bag half to to a piece of fabric and size it properly a la Wooki (note that the outside of the sleeping bag is now your outside layer). I suspect that the later requires a bit more precision and trial and error, and I'm not sure if the increased thermal efficiency of the Wooki design offers more overall warmth than the converted UQ plus an UQP. If wind and rain are a concern, the UQP approach makes a lot of sense.
