Raven vs Sparrow :: the Lay

Looking at the Raven and the Sparrow and trying to narrow down my choices. Also, I'm new to hammocking.

Being able to "insta-flip" in the Raven between right and left lay looks great. I sleep on both sides and I think that the ability to swap mid-stream sounds wonderful. My question is whether or not I give up any "flatness" between them.

Would the Raven and Sparrow of similar size both lay as flat?

If I lay the hammock itself out on the ground, would the same size Raven and Sparrow have the same exact footprint or are they cut differently?

It looks like the bug net and cover on the Sparrow is asymmetrical and so that determines whether it is right lay or left lay, I'm wondering if the hammock itself is also cut differently.

Is there a difference in weight between a similarly built Raven and Sparrow? How about a difference in volume when packed?

I asked this in the Raven thread but I'll ask it here too. Any risk of more bugs in the Raven because of how the bug net shifts around?

    Inquiring minds hope to know.

I think bugs would really have to try and get in there. They get in anyway when you get it.!

Both DH hammock models are essentially rectangular gathered-end hammocks with the same cut; in the case of the Sparrow, the cut of the parallelogram bug net is what dictates and creates its asymmetrical shape, thereby determining the necessary position of the pull-out and the angle of its diagonal lay relative to the ridge line, while the Raven's less structured symmetrical net conforms more to the input from the occupant. If the dimensions and angle of the Sparrow's lay are pleasing to you, you might like that style of hammock better, but if you like to switch around and/or micro-adjust, the Raven will probably be just the ticket.

Both hammocks are thoughtful, intelligent designs, and DH has a reputation for flawless execution of their concepts, so I'd say there is no wrong choice. HTH...

My wife got the Raven - so far so good

I think "flipping" sounds like a pain to me personally?

Your UQ - if you flip you may need to re adjust? Same for a pad?

I am crafting a large UQ for my wife's setup as we speak and taking this flip flopping into account makes me glad I have no impulse or need to do it

I have both a free bird + bottom open bug net and a sparrow. I love my free bird and the open bottom bug net is so easy to get in and out of. Right now its winter so I just take my free bird into the woods without the bug net which saves me a significant amount of weight. Personally I think both are quite comfortable, yes the free bird has more freedom to move around but I always pick which direction and side I am going to sleep in so that i can adjust my under quilt accordingly, so I agree with PharmGeek on that one.

Honestly I would go with the one that makes your soul happy. Which ever one your more excited to own because you cant go wrong with anything from dream hammock, unless you order a 12 foot hammock thats too big for your tarp which is what i did

Also my sparrow is a little bigger in the sack then my free bird + bug net. Sparrow is two layers plus bug net and over cover. Dream hammock has a great hammock calculator you can use. I would asume its safe to say the more it weighs the more space its going to take in this instance. http://www.dream-hammock.com/HammockCalculator.html

(from what I know the only difference between the free bird and raven is the raven's bug net partially zips and my freebirds bug net looks similar but hangs lower with an adjustable shock cord running all around the bottom to hold it against the hammock's underside.)

I hate it when that happens... but it does, and that's the reality.

Thanks for the good info. I have had some good communication with Papa Smurf (he is awesome!) and I have a game plan now.
