First UGQ purchase - 12' Hex Membrane Silpoly Tarp

I tried the cuben thing and just didn't like it. Silpoly is new to me so I figured I would use the money from selling my cuben tarp and give it a try. Also trying a 12' instead of my usual 11' while I'm at it. I sometimes have to hang my 11' lower when I'm worried about rain and don't have my tarp with doors with me. But then I'm hunching down low which is a PITA and sometimes rubbing my hammock line on the tarp line.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to giving this a try!

I agree with you on the twelve footer. If you have an eleven foot hammock the coverage is a bit skimpy. Since I'm thinking of getting a cuben fiber tarp, I was wondering what you didn't like about it?

I had a lot of reservations going into cuben, but I didn't rush it. I contemplated it for a long time then finally gave it a try. I think in the end, I'm just so used to working with the stretchiness of sil and really being able to pull it tight. Of course cuben isn't going to stretch and doesn't need pulled so tight, but I found it harder to get it taut. Nothing major, just not the way I had envisioned.

The light passing through was nice when I wanted it, making it easier to see stuff in low light...but too much when the sun was out. One thing that was not a problem at all was the pack size. It seemed a lot bulkier, and was, but once in the pack it just flattened out and didn't seem to take any space at all (more of a flat rectangle opposed to a tube)

Overall, I just wasn't feeling it...can't quite explain it. I'm not writing cuben off for good. We'll see how the silpoly does. Always tweaking!

The sylpoly is a low stretch material as well, but i dont think as low as cuban.
It does have ehough to allow a good taut pitch and the ability to pull it nice and tight.
Ever since i got my first sylpoly i have wondered why i didn't try it sooner, it makes a great tarp and going with UGQ's was also a good move for me because they make and build top of the line gear and i'm sure you'll be very happy with your new tarp!
Please post up some pics and let us know how you like the sylpoly material.

What about water retention on the Membrane Silpoly? That's what's holding me back.

I can't say first hand, but from ripstopbytheroll's website on the .93 membrane silpoly I ordered:

Same silpoly benefits of lower water absorption (i.e. no sagging) and increased UV resistance, but in a waterproof textile that's 15-30% lighter than traditional lightweight coated nylon/polyester fabrics.

MEMBRANE Silpoly is best for situations where you want the lightest possible waterproof fabric outside of Cuben Fiber. Lower water resistance than the PU4000 version, but ~15% lighter.

I'm banking on everything Zilla said above. A little stretch to get taut, but not as saggy as silnylon. Sounds perfect!

My tarp will be arriving tomorrow (2/13)!! I'll hang it up immediately in the basement for a test, and hopefully outside "for real" if I get time.

Just in! I think this is exactly what I was looking for. Turns out I just about break even on weight even though it's larger (12') than my mamajamba. Packs a lot smaller though. Win win.

UGQ 12' Hanger on left. Warbonnet 11' Mamajamba on right.

    Hanger (silpoly)

    Mamajamba (silnylon)

    Plenty of space

    Extra coverage with the 12'

I'm really liking the size of this tarp. Sometimes I felt a little iffy with the 11' tarp, but the extra 6" on each side put me at ease. I will also like being able to hang it a little higher and still have enough coverage in the rain. There's a nice mild stretch to the .93 membrane material so I can get a nice taut pitch. Looking forward to seeing how much (little) this sags when wet compared to silnylon.

    Thanks UGQ!!!

I generally prefer 11-foot ridge lines on my tarps, but my 12-foot UGQ Hanger is perfect for my bridge hammocks for three seasons. The side edges are 84" instead of 72" so the cutbacks still cover the wide ends of the bridge.
