Quick question, I was under the impression that you were supposed to seal the undersides of the seams, not the top sides. Does it not matter, does it depend on which sealant you are using, or did I just have the wrong information?

I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.
I've always been of the mindset that sealing the top/outside is better because then your stitching never gets wet. If you seal the underneath, then the entire stitch line will get soaked on the outside of the tarp and the seam seal will just hold all the water in there with more chance of droplets making their way through. I've made many shelters, mostly out of membrane silpoly, one out of cuben, the have always done the outside, FWIW....

I'm in process of making mine. After a mishap with shenanigans, it's coming out OK!
This is my first cut. I used tailor's chalk (Walmart, $1.57) because my marker wasn't doing such a good job.

This is after the cut. I had to cut a piece of paper (folded the same way as the tarp) to make sure I wasn't screwing it up.

I used paper to make the cat cuts like Jellyfish did. It worked very well. I pinned it in place then used tailor's chalk to mark the cut line, removed the paper and made the cut. I decided to set mine only 3" from the end instead of the 6" per the plans because the width on my fabric is only 59" not 62" per the plan. I won't know if it was a good move or not until the tarp is completed.

Here is my old sewing machine, a Singer 206k, 1953 model. Not as fancy as Jellyfish's but it does the job. I used tape to mark the 1/2" seam allowance then moved it to 5/8" for second sewing of seam.

Sewing the third part of the seam.

I didn't pay attention close enough and shenanigans happened on the last three feet of seam.

So I seam ripped it back to where it started and redid it.

It's not pretty but I'm happy with it. I'm not entering a fashion show LOL

Finished top section after being redone.

Now to study Jellyfish's next video before moving on to the tie-outs.
Thank you Jellyfish! I couldn't have done this without the aid of your videos

Jellyfish, you're a saint... thank you for taking the time post these videos. Almost finished with my first tarp and used many of your ideas/techniques. Thank you!

I am so happy! All the sewing is finally done. I just have to seam seal mine.
I made a lot of mistakes though. Biggest one was not paying attention to what side was up when I sewed my corners and sides. Two ended up on the wrong side lol.
I'll post pics tomorrow after I hang it and seal it. Maybe I'll do a video on DIY seam sealer too.
Thank you jellyfish! Your videos were invaluable ☺
