I started with a HH Asym Zip and still have it, and others. Question before going down this deep rabbit hole...Backpacking or car camping? HH weigh in around the combined weight of the Dutch, bug net, and supershelter tarp, but more adjustability. Merely my $.02.

    For $300...

That's $295 + shipping for a complete setup, except for the top quilt - which you can use an unzipped sleeping bag for now.

This is the reason why a lot of folks will steer you away from the more expensive hammock. Most newbs focus on the hammock, and really, its probably the least important part of the whole setup. I've slept in hammocks that were a little short, a little narrow, a little too wide, and especially several that were a little too enclosed with the bugnet. Slept fine in all of them, just a matter of preferences. Go cheap on the hammock for now and learn what your preferences are.

c4, you've been given great advice above, but I'll add my $.02 anyway. I, too, started with a HH, but for my height (6'1"), I found that I preferred an 11' hammock. (I now have three of those: from BIAS, Dutchware, and my new favorite, Simply Light Designs. Once folks start hanging, they seem to become collectors. )

If you are not sure if hammock hanging is for you, one advantage that has not been mentioned is that if you get an HH from some retail stores, you can return it for a full refund. I would also agree that the HH has simplicity going for it, but that is not such an issue once you have discovered this forum and Shug's youtube videos.
