How do you make a lockstitch?

I have had problems having my silnylon push down into the machine when I backstitch. Someone suggested to us a lockstitch, but I can't find anything on my machine or in its manual about a lockstitch.

Can every machine do a lockstitch? The only thing that I can think of is to adjust the stitches per inch to a higher number, but don't know if that's the same thing.

I had the same issue trying to do a lock stitch with one machine I had. What worked for me was to hold the material while the machine made 2-3 stitches in the same spot. I never had a problem doing it that way, hope this helps.

Get a packet of tissue paper, the same stuff you use for putting in gift bags and put a small piece of it at the beginning and end of your piece of fabric. I usually have the tissue paper extending out about an inch from the piece of fabric. When you're done just tear off the tissue paper and you'll have a nice clean stitch without having the fabric sucked down into the feed dogs. I got this tip from my step mom and it's saved me a ton of headache. You can also use the tissue paper between layers of fabric if it's especially slippery and that will stop it from slipping around so much.

You also might try covering the plate hole with some blue tape and let the needle make its own hole through it. This will reduce the sizes of the hole and reduce the chance of the material getting sucked down.

I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.

Put the stitch length to zero, stitch 4x. If you want extra security, you could advance 1 stitch, put the length back to zero, and give yourself 4 more stitches. Then proceed as normal.

I always seem to lose my tape when I try this. I guess I am extra clumsy.

On some machines you can lower the feed dogs. I would think this would work for a lock stitch, no? I'm not sure my Brother can go to zero stitch length, but it can drop the feed dogs. I haven't tried either technique yet.
