+1 on the mest. It's a great piece of gear and very versatile. Not to mention cost effective, no seam sealing, etc.

Thanks for the idea. I never thought of this. I figured if it rained, I'd just stay in my hammock to sit around. However, I actually like this idea for car camping. I bring a chair for that. I might try just doing this with my cheap Yukon tarp.
I usually do. But I made a very small fire by my hammock one time. Down-wind, away from my gear as much as possible. It was nice sitting out of the rain, but any change in breeze totally soaked me in smoke. Gear stunk for WEEKS! I didn't want to wash most of the items, so I let them air out in the yard. It worked, but I'll never be doing all that again.
The extra 5oz mini tarp will definitely be worth it. I like to make a fire about 50' away just to be safe.
