I made the hammocks for outdoor use, and will hopefully last while they grow. The flat size is 9' x 5' out of ripstop nylon. Whipped ends. Whoopie slings and toggles.
For summer, I'm planning on making underquilts out of surplus Army poncho liners. I'm not sure about bugs, now that we live in Flagstaff, Arizona. This past year, I didn't have any bugs, so I'm bug net free for now too. I've got a few bug nets we can use if we need to.
There's another convert! Great idea with the bunk bed.
My daughter has my first hammock in her room and she loves the fact that she only has to throw the blankets into the hammock to make it.
I do not wish to be disturbed - but I can't help it!
What a great idea. My sons would love that. Will have to try it and see what they think! Thanks for the pic! The smile says it all.

Bravo! Lucky kid.
I looked at getting a loft bed for Joker to do this with. Walmart has a twin size loft bed right now for $149. As you said, twin is a little narrow for an adult to fit into a hammock. There are some full-sized ones out there but they usually have desks underneath, and are designed so the desks give the bed some structural integrity. I'm sure they could be modified so there's room for a hammock under there.
I also did some searching on DIY loft bed plans. That's probably the best bet if you're handy with wood. Make an oversized full loft bed so you have some storage up top beside the mattress, or just make a queen-sized loft bed.
But a twin is plenty for kids to have fun in!

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
My kid's LOVE their loft-bed hammocks. One has a bridge type (1 fixed hang point, 3 adjustable hooks, the other has a hybrid: gathered head-end and separated foot end. Add a rope-light overhead, and you almost can't get them to stop reading...
The nice thing about (small) kids is you can use almost any fabric, including fleece...
Re: Loft bed: 2 DIY options: 1 build a loft bed:
Building loft beds are really simple. 2x4 corner pillars, 1x12 "pine shelving" for the bedframe, 2x2 bed-support rails (inside of bedframe) and 1x2 cross-pieces at 6" intervals to support the mattress... Add a top rail for safety, and horizontal supports about 18" off the ground and you're good... (I also make ladders out of either 2x2's or Housing-jointed 1x4's)
(I bolt them to the walls since I'm in earthquake country.) Major pieces are held together by 1/4" carriage bolts, smaller pieces by wood-screws. It's amazing how the kids love to get involved to make/paint their own beds...
Option 2: Use 3/8" eye bolts in wall-studs to support a kid's hammock... use 4" long eye bolts, and pre-drill the holes. With some droop, 3/8" eyes will hold a surprising amount of weight on a well-constructed wall... (3/8" lag screws are rated at 300 pounds of pull-out resistance per inch buried in pine, if the wood doesn't split.)

I know I late...sorry for bumping...
I built a bunk bed for my boys back when they were little. They eventually grew out of it and the bed was disassembled and stored for a long time. Somehow, it came up in conversation with my friend T, so I lashed it to the top of my little car and took it to his house.
With the help of his two young boys, the perfect choice for a bed like this types https://10restbest.com/best-loft-bed...dults-and-kids , we reassembled it. These aren't my normal construction journal pictures, but they show how the bed goes together. The creation of the bed was done mostly with hand tools, and all of it is hand made. It goes together like a puzzle.

The boys help me unpack the poles and posts.

The headboard went together first, two stretchers on the bottom, three on the top. Then the long poles were inserted into the holes, again two on the bottom and three on the top on each side.
