Probably strong enough for most dyi stuff but lacks a lot of things you'd want too. And all of those old Singer machines I see online are way overpriced for what I think their actual practical value are. But if I had room and got it for free maybe.. Otherwise I'd say go for something a few decades later.
Look up Tac Blades blades video about buying sewing machines on YouTube, lots of great advice (he talks about those old Singers too)!
EDIT: Here's the video:

Wow! That is beautiful. That looks like a manual treadle machine. You wouldn't have any trouble sewing at slow speed, or controlling whether the needle stops in the up or down position!
I'm new to sewing, so I can't really answer your questions, but I'm definitely interested in following this. My guess would be that you can get a modern, electric machine for cheaper, and it will have a bunch more functions, but man that's a piece of history there.

Looks like it's lacking the belt that drives the machine. The one's I've seen has been made of leather, don't know if you can get replacement belts for those today without doing some diy solution...

I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.
Treadles are fun to use but they take a little practice. The belt is missing but there are some places to get them online. It only does straight stitches with no reverse. It can be used for gear but IMO I would pass. If you are new to sewing get an electric machine with at least reverse before taking on a treadle.
