I know your trip is in the rear view mirror at this time, but for future consideration perhaps an UQ with a zip on/zip off extension. For my own style, I like the 3/4 length for backpacking trips in the summer. The zip in extension allows me to have 2 UQ in one. Zipped in, the UQ becomes full length and idea for winter hikes or car camping.

Thanks, I was racking my brain for something like this for months. I got some cheap 48" zippers on eBay and stitched it so the pull is part of the extension not the main body and used an additional shock cord (maybe it was an old tennis shoe rig) and the thing works really well. I have no patent and am about sharing ideas rather than making a business of it so if there is a vendor who wants to incorporate it into their arsenal, have at it.

I like KAM snaps and put them on my top quilt last summer, but I've been cloth diapering my son for two years now...I see KAM snaps too much already .

That would certainly dampen one's enthusiasm, I would imagine.

I know I'm coming late to this party, but if the thread's still active. . .

Kitsapcowboy, can you tell me how you're cutting the 3 yards of fabric (58" wide) to allow you to get the long centerline (the hypotenuse) without sacrificing coverage (protection) along the sides? I was just going to make a 96" rectangular gathered-end-hammock-style UQP, but if I can both increase overall length and shave weight, well, how cool is that?

Love those patterns, by the way.

    Thanks!

My DIY underquilt protectors have all been rectangular with gathered ends, starting by simply removing the selvage from a 3-yard (108") full-width run of calendared fabric. The longitudinal centerline of the UQP follows the longitudinal centerline of the hammock and the short edges of the UQP terminate a little more than a foot from each end.

Many thanks. Both the "Tiger Stripes" animal print and the "Timbuktu" mud cloth pattern are available in digitally printed, lightweight, calendared Argon fabric perfect underquilts at Dutchware Gear in the Print2Fabric section.
