    Insullated hammock vs underquilt

I was looking to upgrade to some more comfortable insulation and decided to make an under quilt. I was wondering if I could just take some rip stop nylon and build a hammock with two layers, some baffles to keep the insulation distributed and just have an insulated hammock instead of an independent under quilt. Basically a hammock quilt.

Would there be a problem with something like this?

I'm not concerned too much about weight as I am comfort. I plan on camping for three weeks this summer. My Therma-rest pad doesn't cut it long term. It gets cold spots and is always spinning out of place as I roll throughout the night. And with the sleeping bag and stuff its impossible to get in and out of bed without messing the bed up and having to completely remake it and bundle up just right.

I have been thinking about doing the same and placed my order for fabrics last week. I added some fleece for the interior for the extra snugness

It's been tried quite a few times, and only a few have had success with it, as there are SOOOOOO many variables. Those with success include:

    - Bonefire
    - Sheltowee
-theclark5 (I think that is his name on this forum - he used Climashield where the others use down)

    And many others ....
Phycotron, I'd suggest some searches. There have been many threads on DIY insulated hammocks. As Harold "Dynamite" Payson wrote (in a book on boatbuilding), "Don't use your own head when you can use somebody else's!"

Very true. Inspiration can come from many sources. With that said, Phychotron, feel free to ask questions. I'm happy to answer questions where I can.

Also, WV, I'm very excited to meet you in June.

Well I haven't decided on a design quite yet. I finally pulled the sewing machine out and will be doing some more serious research now. I'm flat broke but I have a few yards of rip stop nylon. I can afford a few dollars on insulation but not sure the best way to implement it.

What should I look for in terms of breath ability and waterproofing?

Lots of options on fabric, but that is where I was going to shop if needed.

would sewing baffles weaken the hammock at all?

I did one recently with 1.1 nylon, 62" wide. Made a sewn gathered end hammock then added a second layer filled with 5.0 climashield that's about 3 ft wide and 5 ft long. Stitched it a bit too tight, but it worked out OK. Second layer runs from my shoulders down. Insanely comfortable. Using it with an underquilt - still cold at night around here. Fabric is breathable DWR and have had no condensation problems either indoors or out.

I've long thought that something like this would be ideal for work places where they currently have mattresses for workers - like a fire station - making for much more efficient use of space, not to mention more comfort and less laundry. In spaces with A/C or cooler weather.

In summer, with no A/C, or let's say "challenged" A/C, just use uninsulated hammocks. I'm sure the mattresses used aren't the best. Firefighters deserve better! (and others)
