    Ridgerunner spreader bar replacement

I'm planning on getting the Mountainsmith Trekker fx poles to replace the standard RR spreader bars. On the Warbonnet site, where they list the hiking pole tip set, they say that "you may also need to insert a short 1/4″ wooden dowel from the hardware store (often around 12″ depending on the hiking pole) into the head end pole to give it extra support (to keep it from shortening under your weight)". Has anybody had to do this?

    Thanks for your comments.

I've not with mine. But I have only used them a few times and it may be that the locks will get looser over time.

I found these and they work great. I'm 220 and didn't use any dowels

I've been told the MS trekker FX poles don't need an insert for people under 200 lbs at least, the REI shocklight hiker will shorten well below that weight though

I have used the Mountainsmith FX poles. They work as spreader bars, but they are not my favorite trekking pole. I wish the handles were more contoured. They have a straight EVA foam handle that get a little tiring to grip over the long haul. I also wish the wrist straps were wider and more padded. My other trekking poles have wider, padded wrist straps. The FX does not and they dig into my wrists a bit. I've been trying to figure some way to pad the wrist straps better. If Mountainsmith could put a contoured cork handle, wider, padded wrist straps, the keep the straight alignment between the camera mount screw on the top and carbide tip on the bottom they would have the ultimate hiking pole/spreader bar.

If I were doing a long trail I would have to seriously consider carrying spreader bars and using more comfortable trekking poles. (I don't think I'd want to use the FX's 8 hours a day.)

Oh, to answer your question I'm about 220# and don't use any inserts and haven't had any problems.

Been using the FS Trekkers since the RR came out. I am running around 200-210 and they don not slip and do not need the extra tip set.

I can verify that for folks over 250 lbs you will probably need an insert at least on the head end. You might be able to go without one on the foot end but when I tried the MS trekker FX poles without an inserts the head end pole lock slipped and the pole was about an inch shorter in the morning. I go around 260 lbs. I think I used a 5/8" diameter wood dowel just long enough to make the poles the same length as the stock spreader bars.

No problems with using my Mountainsmith poles as spreader bars (~180 lbs + an occasional ~22 lb dog). I have had issues, though, with the poles becoming difficult to adjust. It seems to be important to take them apart and clean them regularly.

I have been "testing" the MS poles for a a couple of months. They seem to work pretty good with no slippage as of yet. But I haven't been hiking all day and then tried to set up my RR so I dint know how much help this is.
