What exactly is the point of a ground sheet/tyvek?

I've seen this mentioned several times and wonder what the need really is. Is it just a comfort item to have under the tarp? I have yet to go hammocking and wished I had a sheet under my hammock. The only thing on the ground under my hammock is my camp shoes. Am I missing something on this ground sheet thing?

For one, you can put your boots and pack on it. The other thing is if you need to pitch your hammock as a bivy sack because you ain't got no trees, you have a ground cloth to protect your hammock fabric.

Insurance if you go to ground.

Insurance if your tarp fails, bones break, need to make a surrender flag, lose your pants, etc

It's just a light multi use item.

Convenience. Put all your crap on it overnight while you're in your hammock. Clean place to step out. Could be rigged as a gear hammock or pack cover. Mostly a luxury item, and as others have said a JIC item. I like mine.

This is all I could think of until I saw the other points.

I see how it could be advantageous in some situations to have the pack there with you under the tarp. I've been using a Big Carl pack hanger for a while. As long as it isn't pouring rain, it's been great.

Apparently you don't live in rainy western Washington. My ground sheet (a piece of polycryo from a storm window kit) keeps my feet and my gear away from the soggy ground.

Funny you mention that. I used to live there. I lived in Bellevue for a few years. Stuck in Nebraska now...

Most of the rain I experience when camping I find myself comparing to the constant drizzle we faced out there.

With that said, I sure do miss it out there.

I actually really like mine for everything but the snow. Gives me someplace clean to stand and brush off my feet before entering the hammock or take my shoes off/on etc.

In addition to all the above uses I also like to have mine as something to throw on the ground when I first arrive at whatever site I find to hang/camp. I tend to pull a bunch of stuff out of my pack all at once, and having the Tyvek patch keeps things organized and also from getting lost under the leaves, etc. I also once used it to carry water...worked surprisingly well.

I wonder how it is we have come to this place in our society where art and nature are spoke in terms of what is optional, the pastime and concern of the elite?
