    Tarp in snowy conditions

How important are doors for your tarp set up when hanging in snowy conditions? Do you use doors or just pitch your tarp closer to the hammock to block cold wind or snow from coming in?

I am curious how many of you find doors to be a necessity and how many of you think they are optional.

Even if it's only psychologically, I find them to be a necessity. Not just for snow but for high wind and/or rain. I like feeling like I'm well protected from the elements and sleep better because I believe I am.
    Good luck,

    Every winter setup is different.
I use my tarp and snow banks to block the prevailing wind. My tarp setups are not what you see in all the tarp ads but it works.

Shug had a video where he piled up snow on both sides of the tarp to "seal it"... seemed smart to me. That being said it did not take care of the ends (where the doors are) and I personally think that the doors would not be regretted in the snow

Makes a huge difference in whether or not it's going to be a great night in the hammock or one that makes you countdown the hours till sunrise so you can get back to the car.

Doors all the way for me. When it's blowing snow and the wind changes you'll be glad you have them... imo

+1 Doors and bottom edges close to ground as best as I can are a must for me if you have more than a light "one coat/spackle coat" of snow and/or variable cold winds. But if wind is calm when you retire, finding that calm weather change after you nod off, now with blowing snow falling is nasty at best. You'll be crying tears of regret and taking a long nap the next day to make up for lost sleep. Maybe even the further horror of trading your gear for a tent with a full fly! ; )

It's not just snow. Any time you are dealing with any amount of wind you will find doors make a big difference.
    YMMV
