DIY Top Quilt - so it begins....

First step done - feeling good!

I used a TQ calculator I found on this forum but also compared my math using simple LxWxH / fill power to get total ounces of down.

I'll have 1 oz per 14 verticals baffles - height of the baffles will be 2.5 inches after sewn on and will shoot for a bit of overstuff to get maybe 2.75-3 inch total loft for 10-20 degree "rating".

As I say in the video I'll use a footbox plug sewn in - no more cinching the end.

Waiting now for my baffle material as I ordered the wrong amount - doh! Now worries - order already placed.

I like the colors you chose and am now very curious about the chalk line. Will you also use that to mark where you will sew your baffles?

Very nice start, love the chalk line idea! Can't wait to see the finished project. I'd really wanna tackle a quilt too, after some much needed time behind the needle of course. Hope it turns out great.

    I guess it depends.

Tonight I test out some sewing of scraps with the wonder tape a bit more and see how that goes.

If it goes well then I can simple make my intervals along the width of the head and foot end and with the help of my wife - I can put down the lines of wonder tape - which will be nice and straight lines?

If that turns out sketchy then I'll need to make for placement then apply the wonder tape - but the chalk would be a problem for applying the wonder tape I suspect so if I do the chalk likes - I'll use it as a quick guide for a series of marks with a grease pencil or something then get the chalk off then apply the tape

The chalk for this won't be durable enough

It works great for making a mark for a simple cut but once you pick up the fabric the chalk starts brushing off

What I need is to coat the line in some kind of ink lol

Actually what I may look into is find perhaps a laser level as a basis to make a series of marks along each 90 inch line x 13...

    I'm spit balling here lol

Does your machine have a part that looks like this? If so, I would just use that.

You use it as a guide and can line it up on the next baffle over.

I do not think I have that part, and I am not sure I entirely follow...I for fun ordered that ink line on amazon with some amazon points....I can return it if it fails to work, so ill see...I watched a youtube video of it in use and it looks promising...with this I can perhaps mark 26 90 inch lines very nicely in rapid fire

But if the ink bleeds through or some other issue, I ditch that.....its fun trying new methods of things.

I use a piece of soap and painter's tape, works well for holding the stretchy mesh in place. Mark baffle seam allowance w/soap, and mark stitch line on fabric w/soap. Line the soap lines up and tape down the seam allowance of the mesh right next to the soap line, sew along the soap line. Helps maintain a uniform baffle height.

That thing attaches to the foot assembly and makes for a guide for a straight line.

    Ink line sounds promising.

soap...I read that some time ago...freaking brilliant, want to try that...the chalk I bought is annoying at times on this slippery fabric...

Thanks Jellyfish - ill keep you up to date...I probably will not get my baffle material till Friday night at this point, so not much will be done till then...

What is the name of that attachment?
