How to sew a rolled hem with a *rolled hem foot* on outdoor fabrics

Locking the stitch is just to prevent unraveling of the thread. I will lock several stitches on load-bearing seams and heavier fabrics that will be under stress (hammock channel, for example), but rolled hems on light fabrics don't need it.

Your thread is going to be stronger than your nylon or poly fabric, and every time you punch a hole in the fabric, you weaken it, so I want to sew with as few needle-punches as possible. This is why I like my stitches on the long longer side of the spectrum.

I've used Lock-Tight on buttons and things that are really are under stress.

    Ok - watched it through

    Wow - this is great!!

    I am gonna try it!

Which model should I get for my brother and what width for starters?

I plan a hex tarp with cat cuts and this may be used (after plenty of practice)!

I believe a narrower foot will take cat curves easier than a wider foot.

    Ordered one on Amazon now!

    By weekend I'll be practicing!

I'm assuming using it for binding two layers of fabric could get dicey? Example: closing the perimeter of a top quilt?

You could roll 2 layers together, bind them and, finish the hem all at once, sure. It isn't like that seam on your quilt is going to bear a large load. Test it with your fabric first, but I think yeah.

Yeah, remove the foot. No this should not have to be done. This the only foot I have to do this with. I haven't tried this foot with fabric other than hammock related. The machine itself has no problem sewing, and this foot works fine if only I could get the fabric through the curl without the ridiculous gyrations. I've watched your vid several times, you're able to get the fabric to slip into the foot so easily.

Def more clearance in your foot than mine. Is that foot from Husky? Wonder if it would fit my machine, it takes the typical low shank snap on type. Maybe I can find one.

EDIT: Here's a set that appears to be more "open". Looks like they may be easier to thread than mine (Brother SA126).

My foot is made by Huaqvarna Viking and it is made to fit my machine. I am not sure all the attachment points on the feet are interchangeable.

Do you have a sewing machine repair shop in your area? Calling them may be worth a try.

Oops, I forgot to add the link to the set mentioned in last post.

    Here's the one I have.

Oddly enough, I work in a fabric/sewing store which also does sewing classes. You'd think I'd be a bit more knowledgeable. But I'm just the IT dept, I don't get to spend too much time with the girls on the floor. Several years ago I shared my office with the sewing class coordinator, but that was long before I got involved in this stuff. Yeah, I'll ask around. I know we only have feet for Bernina, which appears to be tall shank.

I'd bring that naughty foot to work and see what the ladies have to say. I bet there is something wrong with it. You should be easily able to loop your fabric into the foot without having to detach it from the machine.

I spoke with Nancy, our class coordinator. She was going to loan the class foot for me to try, but it's the wrong type connection for my machine. I'll bring my foot/machine in next week and she'll try it and see if she can figure if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's just a cranky foot. She also said I can use the serger machines if I want for small edges, and she'll show me how to do it.
