    Dry/compression sack for top and underquilt?

    I couldn't come up with any search results so;

    How do you guys and gals store your warm down goodness during your long hikes?

    I've got an AT thru attempt coming up and keep trying out different options.
    So far, for a 20 degree top/underquilt pair inwas thinking a 15L compression dry sack at the bottom of my bag in a pack liner (I like redundant safeties). My hammock is a blackbird XLC which I currently keep in its original stuff sack in the pack, though if it gets wet I lash it to the back of my pack.

    How does that sound to the hammock ninjas among us?

    I've been using cuben fiber stuff sacks for several years. They work pretty nice and weigh nothing.

    most backpackers that I know use a trash compactor bag (or similar) to line their pack, and then just toss their quilts inside on the bottom. this way, they only get compressed as much as need be decided by the volume of your pack as opposed to a separate compression sack...

    I like that notion but I don't generally use a pack cover and for my down, I like having a second layer of protection, especially on a long wet trail like the AT

    If your pack is somewhat water resistant, and you have another waterproof sack (compression sacks are over rated, I promise. Try it) like a dry sack that doesn't have a fully sealed closure, it will compress as much as it needs to and expand as much as it can. The trip I decided to ditch all my compression sacks changed my life. I'll never go back to hard parcels of packed goods. Down goes in a loose, waterproof liner. All my other gear may go into stuff sacks, but they are oversized and floppy. It's good stuff. The day you can say goodbye to hard packed little wads in your pack will be the best day of your back country life. I promise.

    The Large rectangular dry bag near the bottom is what I stuff my 3-season quilt set into.

    It's probably heavier than you want, but I believe this is what you originally described: https://www.rei.com/product/730882/s...ssion-dry-sack

    +1 on BillyGoats advice...
    Loose stuff is the way to go in a standard pack.
    [I use a loosely closed eVent bag for my sleep system and quilts to keep them together in case I have to unpack without hanging]

    So a standard 15 liter dry sack is good enough, you think?
    Or is using a pack liner enough protection? I'm very much leaning towards a pack liner and a standard sea to summit 15

    The only other stuff sacks I use are dry bags for my food and for my clothes. My cook kit is in a non dry sack. Everything else is in ziplocks or randomly stuffed into the pack. I just worry about the possible exposure to water over a period of months with just a bag for a pack liner

    The trash compactor bags are quite tough, light and CHEAP. make sure the flap is folded down around the gear and, provided you don't submerge yourself, water can't get in. You can even keep your clothes in it, saving the weight of the extra dry bag...
