There is the HANG CON in January in Florida. I'm not sure how far this is away from you, but it is a good place to see A LOT of different gear and get A LOT of information. You can find the thread in the SouthEast hangs section. It is easy to attend since they provide most of the food you will need and there are indoor restrooms with hot showers. This is a great place to start if your schedule will allow it.
The essential part of me can not be discussed here. Ask me in person.

I always think it's I nteresting how people will just throw out a brand and infer that you can't go wrong with that. You'll probably encounter some of that. They mean well. Usually, the items recommended have worked well for THEM.
    Remember all those adjustable-mattress ads?
Those companies are still in business because not everyone sleeps the same way... One size DOESNT fit all...
My advice is to take your time, and sleep on a decision, overnight....
That tarp, quilt or hammock will be there in the morning, or for that matter, a week from now...
    You'll make better choices.

Also Hangcon? It's in Ocala, FL, about four and a half hours from you, this January.
Excellent idea. Great place to meet hundreds of hammockers, and see most of the choices out there.
    Regards, Ted

If you are ever around Birmingham swing by and "hang out" and we can talk gear and such

    Best of luck

I'll add the comment about DIY. With a 500 dollar budget if you have a sewn my machine laying around you could possibly squeeze some extra value.

What kind of camping are you planning? Long distance backpacking or kayak camping or simple short overnight backpacking or car camping?

I guess a little more information I'm looking to pick up backpacking. I also have very little gear I could use to piecemeal on. So basically I've got a clean slate to work with.
Shug's got a whole lot more than 10 videos! While he has his tutorial series which has a lot of great information, don't overlook his other videos. Lots of good stuff embedded in there!

If you get through 10 of his videos and enjoyed them you will not doubt watch most of them lol

I have watched nearly all of the bwckpack trip videos while sitting around "in my moms old bath robe" unapologetically
