    Down Throw Top Quilt

I got some down throws for Christmas and had some time today to finish a topquilt. It's finished dimensions are 45" x 72" with a sewn footbox 20" deep. I was able to keep all the down inside the quilt and shake it and trim it so now the top section has ~15% more down per volume and the foot box has ~20% more compared to the original fill. The top has about 1.5"-2" of loft [Instructions HERE]

Next up will be a double layer underquilt.

How did you move the down around without cutting it open?

Ripped horizontal seams leaving long vertical tubes. Sewed a line of stitches and cut between them to remove 3 tubes from the side, (cut a piece off of that for the footbox cap the same way).Sewed it lengthwise to the bottom. This made the quilt a bit too long at 85" and the piece sewn to the bottom is longer than the quilt is wide. Then shake the down out of the grey areas (see attached pic), sew/hem and your done.

I'm curious about this as well - also, where'd you source your original throws?

One is the Bed Bath and Beyond that is identical to the Costco ones. The other two are the Sams Club ones which are slightly smaller (50" x 60" vs 60 x 70), so they'll get made into a double layer under quilt with draft collars.

I saw the sams club ones and was thinking of trying to put together a top quilt if I don't buy one. Do you feel the sams club is worth it?

They are smaller so are probably better for an UQ that doesn't need to be full length. Also they have a lower %of down to feathers (70% vs 80%) On a side note the fabric feels slightly thicker and they seem better sewn. I do think you get a better value from the Costco/BBB ones.

Awesome. I will take a look at bed bath and beyond. No close Costco. I may try the sams ckub one and stuff it with some more down. Thanks for the help.

You can order a 2-pack of the throws from Costco's website for $40 plus $8 shipping and $5 for non-member. For a total of less than $55 you would have 2 throws that are larger and higher fill power than the Sam's Club throws.

I will take a look. My mother in law lives near a Costco so I may have her check and see if they have any.
