    New to hammocking camping

Hello friends, my name is Dennis and I am green behind the ears when it comes to hammock camping. I have been an avid backpacker/camper for many years but have decided to try hanging. I am hoping I can find some good advise on thiss forum to help cut the learning curve.

    Welcome from Medina, TN!
This is a great group of people here. Everyone is eager to jump in and help out. The important thing is to just get out there and try things. You probably already know this but....test your gear in your back yard before go on a trip to make sure you stay dry, comfortable, warm.....well you get it. Anyway, ask questions. There will be someone that has the answer to whatever question you have .

First read the Stickies and watch Shug's Ten Part videos on how to hang a hammock. Attend a group hang before you buy anything--you will get a crash course on hammocks. Browse the Forums and maybe all this can help you choose gear that you will be happy to keep and use. I hang for comfort--otherwise I'd sleep on the ground. I find a 11foot long by 5feet wide hammock to be comfortable. And recently I opted for more comfort and got a 12foot long by 6foot wide hammock--it ain't for everybody. If you want to keep warm through the night--read and heed all information on insulation--pads and underquilts and topquilts. Good luck and if I see you at a hang--I will drink up all your coffee!

Phantom pretty much stole my thunder. Watch the Shug videos and read a lot of the stickies. Don't be in a big rush to buy gear and pretty much ignore whatever the sales guy at REI, Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc try and tell you. Most of them don't hang and will just push what they sell.

There are lots and lots of new folks coming over to hanging and consequently this forum every day. Chances are if you have a question it's already been asked. Unfortunately, the search engine here on the forum stinks and we use a ton of acronyms. Best bet....learn the "lingo" (TQ=topquilt, UQ=Underquilt, etc) then use google to search.

Put in your search terms such as ( UQ TQ Warbonnet site:hammockforums.net). So long as you have that last part in the search string (site:hammockforums.net) it will restrict the search to the forums here so you'll only get a few dozen instead of thousands of results.

    Welcome and good luck.....

I agree. Here is some help finding the Shug videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7NZVqpBUV0&t=22s You should grab a coffee and watch the 10 part series. After that, you will probably want to watch all of his videos. They really helped me get it figured out.
Homer: Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.

Hank Scorpio: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks!

Despite speaking in the 3rd person, being a clown, and being a ginger, I too highly recommend Shug videos...the entire newb series, and in time, you may just watch all of his stuff. I have not watched his RC airplane sort of stuff...because that ginger devil probably would someone make me want to do some other hobby I have no time for.

Beyond hammock forums, books, yt videos, etc....just get out and practice your "skills" (everytime I say that I think of napoleon dynamite) - pitch your tarp in different ways, your hammock, etc...backyard fiddling for me was very helpful.

Good luck, and welcome from my neck of the woods, Birmingham, AL.
