Xenon Sil 1.1 vs Sil Nylon from Dutchware &

    Hello

I will be making a tarp for Hammock camping, and am trying to decide between Xenon Sil 1.1, and Sil Nylon from Dutchware. I read somewhere that Xenon compacts better, which would make it more desirable to me, but wondered if that's true.

I'm willing to pay the extra $1 per yd for Xenon if there is a benefit. Anyone know if it's more compressable, just as waterproof, as strong, etc.

    Thanks,

    Granville

I have made a number of tarps. In my opinion sil nylon stretches too much now that there are better low stretch options. As for packability, I haven't noticed a relevant difference.

Agreed. I will never make another nylon tarp. Xenon is polyester so it won't stretch out on you every night.

I don't thing there is a big difference but the xenon will pack smaller. Here is a vid and you can see what an 11 foot hex tarp will pack down to.

meh...I am making my first xenon tarp from the MYOG site, xenon sil 0.9...I also own a superfly (silnylon)....

I will still use shock cord on my new tarp (about 2/3 done now), because I am clumsy and worry Ill trip and damage the tarp....stretch or no stretch...superfly is a popular tarp for a reason....despite its tendency to stretch, this does not really make it an "unworkable problem" in my opinion.

Also, this is a big side note...but this product "dritz wonder tape" sticks very well to silnylon...and Brandon from WB has stated in the past he used it...my initial testing of it is still preliminary, but boy, doing the ridgeline and even the hems using this stuff would make the build MUCH easier I suspect. This stuff does NOT work on the Xenon Sil. I think if I ever have to make another tarp for say a buddy (as a favor lets say), I may use silnylon just for this reason!

Maybe we are thinking of different tapes but the idea of using a water soluble dissolving tape doesn't seem like the greatest idea to me on a tarp that is designed to shield you from rain.

The purpose of the tape is not to confer water resistance....it is to bind up a seam for easier sewing. As I said, Warbonnettguy had used it in the past (not sure if he still does)...you would still need to seam seal the ridgeline...although as I understand, if you go with grosgrain you may not need to seam seal the ridgeline.

Ok, got you now, I use a roll hem or walking foot and don't pin so it wasn't clicking for me. I was thinking of tape in place of sewing which seemed a fairly bad idea.
