You're Doing Underquilts All Wrong. Get A Clew ;-)

Greetings. I'm sharing a new underquilt design i recently prototyped. It's a game changer for me.

Instead of hanging the quilt with a shock cord loop, it suspends via elastic hammock "clews". This changes the quilt dynamics with the following benefits:

• 100% snug up against you, everywhere, all the time. Absolutely no gaps or air pockets.
• Takes the same shape your hammock does, so no squeeze.
• Hangs the same way every time.
• Lighter design.
• Works with any hammock.
• You can retrofit any existing underquilt with clews.

Well done! The ingenuity displayed on this forum never ceases to amaze. I just finished a Costco UQ and I will definitely be adding a lev mod. I like the idea, but on the above picture it looks like there are gaps between each attachment point on the uq. Do these flatten out as you put weight in the hammock?

Interesting to see how the little gaps affect things, a fat draft collar should fix any gaps I guess.
I think you are being a bit optimistic with the phrase "less cordage, less weight". I would be a bit concerned by the extra weight of the shockcord nettles, would be lighter to use fabric (a la Warbonnet Wookie).

If the cord points are aligned with the lengthwise stitching, don't you think the pleats are fairly irrelevant?
The loft in the tubes themselves should block any chill infiltration.

I followed the exact instructions for the clew suspension and it comes in at 2 1/8 oz. It seems very light weight. Will try my first overnighter in it tomorrow to see how it hangs.

This is an amazing concept and hopefully one that a few of the do it yourselfers will tackle. I'm amazed the amount to time and energy you've put into this. This is a great write up and diagrams and then to share it with the group. Well it's just incredible. It certainly gets the creative juices flowing in some. The gaps that a few mention are no different that the larger gap created by no center suspension and once occupied would definitely seal as good or better with a small draft collar. Let's see if any of the big guns pick this up and try it. Congrats on the idea and thanks for sharing.
