    DIY Underquilt Add Down

    Hi,

It is probably addressed here somewhere, and if it is please point me there. But, if not my question is this: If I remove the side sewing on a Double Black Diamond throw so that I have all straight baffles. And the open the ends on one side (or both) and simply stuff more down in them, wouldn't that lower my cold rating? Is it just that simple? Is yes, that is what I am planning on doing.

To all you engineer types here: Is there some sort of calculation to determine my cold rating? Also are there any suggestions on where to buy more down, how much to stuff it and can I get this thing down to a 20 deg. rating.

    All thoughts welcome and thanks.

    Tom

Wilderness Logics sells down in easy 1oz packages. Watch Fronkey's video on stuffing down.

Without sewing baffles with actual height, you cannot get down to 20F because sewn-thru baffles allow a degree of heat to "seep" out/ cold to seep in. No matter how much you stuff it this can't be avoided since no insulation exists to block air flow between the chambers.

As for temp rating, warm sleepers generally can't take a sewn-thru design lower than low 30s.

    Add real baffles like this:

I only use the Costco throws as a source of down. I buy new material and baffles to sew into a new quilt. I then transfer the down from the Costco throws into the new quilts.
