    mattress topper as pad?

I'm still in the planning stages, so I'm not yet 100% sure which hammock I'm getting. Its just going to be for indoor use. I was thinking of using one of these mattress toppers in the hammock as bottom insulation. The thinner one is 1.5-2" thick and the thicker one is 2.5-3" thick.

Would something like this work well in a hammock?

Sure anything will work for insulation just some products/materials work better than others. Give it a try and us know how you like it. I'm sure hikers wouldn't ever use this as that stuff is heavier than lead.

If you are using your hammock indoors you may not need bottom insulation. I have found that I don't need bottom insulation above 60 degrees if the wind is light. You could also try just throwing a blanket in the hammock since you are not worried about weight or compressability. However, you might have a hard time keeping the blanket in place, and personally I like the feel of the hammock. Fortunately, since you are using it indoors you can try all your options without much downside. Happy Hangin!!

Thanks. It gets down to -30F here, without windchill, and there comes a point where I just can't get enough heat in the house to stay warm.

Anything inside the hammock will become difficult to position once you are also in the hammock. Closed cell or inflatable pads work OKish because they have some structure. Blankets, sleeping bags or in your case, mattress pads will frequently wrinkle or roll under your body. I foresee discomfort in your plan.

The same mattress pad suspended underneath your hammock would be much better.

It gets to -30 in your house or where you live? Where do you live?

It might be a little cumbersome in a hammock. Depending on how it's made, you might find it a little too stiff and a little too big to fit in your hammock well. I would suggest testing out a few blankets first and then see what works best.

I like using the SnugPak Underblanket for indoor use during the winter - at $44 you can't go wrong with it.
