    Hammock Width vs. Underquilt Width

I'm just about to gear up for a DIY Hammock and Quilt set and wanted to ask about necessary underquilt width...

If I make a hammock about 70 inches wide, in hopes of a reliably flat lay (I'm 5'10", overkill?) Should I also make a wide-pattern underquilt or is there a clever suspension trick to ensure coverage with a less than wide UQ? I'd rather be able to save some weight and pack space if I can.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

The under quilt only has to be wide enough to cover the space of the hammock you are occupying, not the entire fabric width. Quilt's will confirm to where you lay, and if you do have some problem you can be sure someone probably already has a solution.

Easiest way to test it out would be to hem the sides of an old sheet to the dimensions you want for you quilt and suspend it like an under quilt. Typical width is between 40-50 inches. Some have gone smaller, depends on how big you are, and how much you want to splay out in the hammock.

My hammocks are 64" wide and there are no quilt problems. With the adjustable suspensions, I think opening the end widths a bit should work. The only potential problem that I see is that the suspension lines might ride up the sides pinching the hammock ends..

I have a 70" wide hammock and a 45" UQ. There are no issues.

I actually find underquilts seem to work better in hammocks with no side tie-outs. The underquilt wraps around you very snug with not many air leaks, and when you stuff the top quilt down into the sides you get great coverage all the way around.

For 99% of hangers anything wider than 45-50" will cause problems with gaps. The suspension can only lift an UQ so high, and if you go too wide you will have airspace underneath.
