Over-Compressed Down Burrow and Phoenix 40deg

Hey everyone -- I just purchased a used (new in earlier 2016) phoenix and burrow 40deg, and can tell that the quilts were stored compressed in the stuff sack. They are kind of lumpy, and missing down in spots.

Do I have any hope in getting these back to their glory? Would Hammock Gear be able to somehow "de-compress" these?

    Thanks in advance...

Low dryer and some tennis balls is where I would start

How long have you let them sit out? It may even take an hour or more. A firm shake can help. Don't get crazy with it; just enough to fluff it up.

Being new, I think that's all it will take. If it were used, a cleaning and toss in the dryer would be possible. But definitely not for this new one.

p.s. regarding a dryer - be very, very, very, very, very careful!! You can melt the fragile shell in a fraction of a second! This metal part on most residental dryers gets VERY hot even on low:

If your quilt touches that, it's game over. This part on my dryer is permanently coated in black goo. Luckily, not from my hammock quilts!

I literally just got them in the mail at work -- and when I opened the package, they were in the stuff sacks (I could understand for shipping reasons) - but they felt more lumpy and thin in spots than I thought they should.. I immediately took them out of the stuff sacks and just put them back in the box so they aren't AS stuffed.. I'll spread them out when I get home tonight..

Good to know about that "metal part" in the dryer! Really appreciate all your feedback..

Maybe I should put them in a cloth sack and then put them in the dryer with tennis balls to keep them from touching that hot spot??

I always though about that. Probably less effective being contained in the sack, but better than nothing. But I never tried it so I can't say for sure.

And I apologize, I skipped over the "used" part in your original post. I just saw new and rolled with that. Hopefully they were cared for and the loft will come back. I'm betting it will.

I'm wondering how you "know" they were stored compressed. Is "kind of lumpy" and "missing down in spots" a sure sign of quilts that were stored compressed?

I own HG 40*, 20* and 0* quilts. The 40* quilts have very little down in them (7 oz. in standard Burrow, 4 oz. in Phoenix). The down will shift, because there's not much of it. I just give mine a few shakes, hold it up to the light, and everything is good.

I should have said "I think".. I really don't have much experience with down - but you're right, 40deg has less down in it than the 0's do, so hence the shifting. I probably should have started this post AFTER trying to shake it out at home first..

The clumps are a potential concern. I would properly wash & dry them.

I think they may have been IMproperly washed/dried before. This can easily result in clumping.
