Need some ideas. My first attempt looks sloppy and not that much play.

Those grommets are probably going to rip out. You won't find grommets on a decent tarp.

Hank Scorpio: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks!

Isn't there a loop to tie to instead of the grommet? Looked like it in the pic.

FWIW... That's the mine looks and its held up great with no problems at all since I put the shock cord on after watching Shugs video back in June. Its difficult to get it to look perfect. Also, the price of a tarp is irrelevant when it comes to being decent or not. I've been using the same $60 Snugpak 10x10 tarp since the begging of June and compared to most peoples tarps on here, its cheap ( in price only). It has grosgrain loops on each corner, down each side and across the diagonal in the top. It has GROMMETS on each corner as well , snaps on 2 sides to turn it into a bivy if needed and came with 4 10' tie outs w/ adjusters. Now, compared to a $200 + cuben fiber or silnylon with doors, it might be inferior sure. But decent, absolutely! Even the kelty Noah's tarps or ENO as main stream as they are, are decent. Its decent if it does what YOU need it to do. I use the grommets on mine EVERY time it pitch it and they have held up just as long and strong as the grosgrain loops. And its been through some real nasty summer storms! I think they'll be fine.....Mine are and my tarp is " cheap" . Good luck with it, and as long as you take care of it you can make it last a long time, regardless of price or features.

Tie off to the stitched nylon loop. If you punch a hole in the fabric and pull on it, you'll see it tears easy. Same concept with the grommet. The brass reinforcement does not help enough.

Guy lines with shock cord fastening

Fair enough. I installed a piece of shock cord last night and it was supper easy. The tarp has seen 7 nights and numerous day hikes with zero failure. So far it's cost less then 3$ per "cover". If it fails, I have some Gorilla repair tape and will then probably turn it to a ground foot print.
