Thanks for posting that video. I really enjoyed it. I didn't realize the lodge on top of the mountain was so rustic.

I will have to put that on my hiking list.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. I'd love to hike and camp in the GSMNP but all the permits and reservations just seem like such a hassle. It's a beautiful area, though. Glad you were there before the fires got bad!

Getting into Leconte isn't so easy, but the permit system for GSMNP is online, quick, and easy. I think that the concept of having designated areas for camping is a good one considering the amount of traffic that GSMNP receives. More hassle than wandering into a national forest, but only marginally so.

I'll look into it. Thanks for the tips here and the other thread.

I'm bad at planning ahead, so therein lies my trepidation.

I'm kind of in that bucket, as well. Planning six months in advance for Yosemite was a major undertaking! The nice thing about GSMNP's system is that you can potentially wake up on Friday, decide to go, and start clicking through campsites in the reservation system to see if there is any availability on the trails that you're interested in. Admittedly, for the popular sites, it pays to reserve when the 30-day window opens up if you're planning to go on a weekend.

Exceprt for Mt Leconte and this waiting list is a couple of years long currently. This requires major luck or knowing someone to get short term access to.
