I think a thin wool blanket is fine. It's no more bulky then fleece. There's two faces to packing: volume and rigidity. Wool doesn't compress, but it does bend. Jam it into the empty space in your pack.

I would be interested in something to put between my sleep sack/liner (cotton) and summer quilt to get it to the near freezing temps (I'd call it a 45° rating quilt). I don't want a huge blanket.
