I think a thin wool blanket is fine. It's no more bulky then fleece. There's two faces to packing: volume and rigidity. Wool doesn't compress, but it does bend. Jam it into the empty space in your pack.

I would be interested in something to put between my sleep sack/liner (cotton) and summer quilt to get it to the near freezing temps (I'd call it a 45° rating quilt). I don't want a huge blanket.

It's a hard shift, but if you're here you're hanging. The shift for me was when I stopped sleeping on the ground. Look into a synth tq or blanket (like molly mac makes). It's weird learning to trust the technology because it's so light and doesn't feel heavy enough to cya, but it works! Plan an "easy" trip to an area you know and commit to not bringing the wool!

Wool is nice, but for hiking, nothing beats down.

I don't sleep with a wool blanket but wool is carried in my winter kit.8169541395_05f8dfa9f9_b.jpg

    I even hike with it.8169543103_0b2ce5fbff_b.jpg

Nothing beats wool for breathability 8169570744_f2d7c0fa9f_b.jpg

When it's bed time I only want down.

If you want to cut weight stop putting your wool blankets IN your pack, and make the wool blanket become your pack. A quick search with show you many ways to roll your whole ruck into a pack.

I love a good wool blanket. I leave them at home though. they're heavy. They're bulky. I wouldn't want to carry that on my back for 10+ miles. Even camping, I always seem to crave my downy goodness.

I would imagine that with a pulk that the weight is much less of an issue. Same for base camp or car camping. Though for hiking I would be concentrating on weight reduction rather than anything else.

I just bought one at Sportsmans Guide for $59. Received it yesterday and it is good quality, but heavy. Listed as an Italian Officers blanket, it is a nice blue color.

no need to mend your ways. They are wonderful. When it's time to stop carrying them, you'll know, but in the meantime, why drop your "luxury" item?

I checked another source too. Coleman's Military Surplus https://colemans.com/ seems to have several types from different countries and price ranges. thanks!
