Thank you all for your responses. The few times I've been in cooler weather I had synthetic thermals , Heavier socks, and a beanie hat. I guess the next step would be a fleece or down jacket.thanks again for all of your knowledge. I will have to experiment more next weekend in the back yard.

Now that's the best advice hands down.
Nothing beats backyard experimentation to find what works best for you. Takes the guessing game out of the equation

Backyard is exactly what I was going to recommend. Fall through spring I sleep out back a couple of nights a week outside of any camping trips using my 20F quilts. I've found that ~40 and up I sleep in boxers. 30-40 I use Capilene long underwear (would switch to wool if I had 250 weight merino), socks, and a SmartWool hat. 15-30 I use fleece underwear, socks, and the SmartWool hat.

I haven't been skunked yet to the point that I came back inside, and I have a good idea of what to carry depending on the forecast.

X2 on the backyard testing. just switched to full length 20F HG UQ from 20F Pheonix and the extra coverage on the feet was incredible. was down to 30 last night and didnt even put on my thick wool socks at all. Normal set up is synthetic long sleeve top, merino wool bottoms, thick but loose wool socks, muff and hat. Best to always change into your dry sleeping clothes when in the hammock- to be as dry as possible. Just have to find what works for you.

20degish. Not for sleeping in, might work well as a pillow and the dive into them for night relief.

Single layer all around. Maybe a balaclava, if it's below freezing.

I really like to rely on my quilts instead of supplementing with clothing. I found that a very light base layer works the best in just about any temp below 40° or so. Patagonia Capilene 2 is thin (basically see thru) but provides just enough to block the chill. So capilene 2 pants and a long sleeve are perfect.

I tried to go lighter on my last trip. It hit 39° and while I was fine with a t-shirt, the coolness on my arms was noticeable. Not bad, but enough for me to wish I just stuck with the long sleeve shirt.

I may bump it up to a thicker base layer when temps are closer to 15° and below.

I am in the less is more camp. I had to explain this to my mom this morning as she was panicking about her grown daughter who lives 1k miles away camping in this weather. Love her to death. Lol.

I am warmer if I set up my shelter carefully and create a good micro climate with my tarp and peapod than if I layer so much that I feel restricted. I prioritize my head, feet, and hands with at the coldest temps adding a warm water bottle near my core.

This is my true winter(20F and below) sleep clothing. This clothing is only put on just before bedtime so it remains completely dry.

My first night out at 30 degrees with 20degree Wooki and 0 degree bag used like quilt I wore synthetic long johns with fleece pants and a fleece top over those. Wool socks and a fleece hat. I was toasty warm but not sweaty and when I got up in the AM, I was not cold when I walked into the house for breakfast. I might reduce my layers to just the long johns to see how that does though. The key is, I didn't get sweaty.
