    Question: winter sleep clothes

While winter backpacking, what is everyone sleeping in? I have both a 20* top/underquilt, while still being wieght conscious , how much extra clothes are we wearing/ carrying? I'm assuming that I shouldn't sleep in the same clothes that have been worn all day. I have not slept out in the colder weather yet. Thank you.

I usually sleep in as little as possible to keep me warm, and avoid wearing damp, dirty, or restrictive clothes.

I usually just sleep in one pair of thermals. I find that I sleep warmer when I have little as possible on. If I feel cold I will add layers on as I go.

At a minimum, for sleep I like full coverage of my body, arms, and legs with a moisture-wicking synthetic layer; this provides a complete microclimate around me while I sleep, keeps me from getting sweaty if I overheat, and protects me from the elements if I have to get out of the hammock quickly during the night. These sleep clothes can be knit (like Coolmax poly or UA HeatGear), woven, or even fleece. (I usually like woven bottoms with a bit of spandex for stretch; mainstream companies like Columbia and Russell Athletic make a lot of garments like this suitable for sleeping while camping.) If the temperature really starts to dip, I may layer, such as a loose knit long-sleeve shirt over a wicking tee or a lightweight micro fleece pullover over a knit poly base layer top.

This the exactly how it should be done. Many people when starting cold weather camping, wear way too many layers to sleep in. This will cause them to sweat, making the layers absorb this moisture and consequently you'll end up becoming cold by having damp clothes against your skin. It is best to start off wearing as little as possible and add 1 layer at a time until you are comfortable.

    Cheers

It depends on anticipated conditions. I do not like to sleep in clothing, however sometimes it is mandatory. Being Canadian by choice, I learned about Durafold underwear. Now. That we are in Oregon I buy a lot of Columbia Sportswear when out and about.
Currently we are never out more than three nights, I have a change of sleep clothes for each night. If we are close to civilization I take light delicates, if we are remote, I have a light base layer, change it nightly, a heavier outer layer. Remote areas require a lot more planning, life depends on being prepared.

A single layer of lightweight "performance" clothing, long sleeves and pants, has served me well down to freezing. Also a balaclava or similar for your head.

Smartwool NTS 250 top and bottom, loose wool socks, Patagonia balaclava, hat, liner gloves. My personal preference is wool for low activity/no sweating tasks and sleeping.
Above the 20's I bring lightweight Patagonia Capilene instead of the Smartwool to save a few ounces and faster drying if I use them to supplement my active layers if going as light as possible (i.e. no extra clothes other than socks).
Starting around single digits I'll add a Patagonia cap 4 hoody and tights as an extra sleeping layer and use them as a supplement active layer if needed.
I'll sleep in my down sweater if needed or just drape it over me inside my top quilt.

I sleep in the lightest layer that I would be willing to brave the elements with if I had to get up to pee...
