Lazy Slug Tube for a Bridge

    Howdy,
I hit Marty up a few weeks ago about trying to squeeze my Warbonnet Ridgerunner, quilts, etc into a LST. For a bridge the pair of long tubes seemed like overkill but I thought maybe a single one might do the trick. He hit me back in no time looking for some required dimensions and in a few days I had a new toy on my doorstep.

This is the first prototype and I asked for something that would fit a summer setup so I got a single straight tube with a 14" opening all the way across and 78" long. Overall weight is 98g (3.5oz). It was able to swallow the ridgerunner, full length lynx 3-season, and a Golite "1-season" quilt. I even crammed my thermarest pillow in there too. My whole sleep system ends up in a giant nylon hotdog, ready to be crammed into the bottom of my pack or a dry bag for paddling.

For now I'm basically using it like the stock double-ended stuffsack from warbonnet. Before stuffing into the bag I cram the suspension lines inside each end so they don't get tangled. A handy-dandy pocket on each end would be a nice addition. I thought I'd have preferred them in netting to save just a bit of weight. Now that I see how the nylon sheds dirt and moisture I think these are a better option for me. They hold everything together while at the same time protecting all that downy goodness from the wet ground. I can also rig my bed but leave it enclosed to make more room under the tarp like a gathered end. It takes just a few seconds to pull back the cover and install the spreader bars, then it's time for bed....

This weekend we're doing a paddling trip in central FL and I expect to see a few other hangers there. Hopefully I'll get a chance to do a bit of show and tell.

Interesting... 78" long... how small does it pack down to?

That depends on how much you want to squeeze it. Overall I think that the individual items packed into their respective stuff sacks (hammock, quilts, pillow) probably take up less space but that's compacted much harder. I haven't had a chance to tinker with this much yet so I'll have to do some experimenting. Last weekend for Grinder's Birthday hang I did basically the same thing minus the tube. Everything went into the bottom of my pack inside a trash compactor bag. It seemed to take up a bit more space but I was trying out a new pack too. I'm happy to sacrifice some pack space for making setup/takedown faster and easier.

I like it.... I have been keeping my quilts in my pack, but putting my bridge in a dedicated stuff sack.... I think I like your solution better. Is there a reason why it's 78" long? It would seem like you could make it a bit shorter?

I wanted whole hammock body and quilt attachment points covered when it's hanging from the suspension. It could do with maybe another 4". As it sits the spreader bar metal brackets and quilt biners will poke out the ends of the tube. They'll stay inside if you really cinch down on the drawstrings but this puts quite a load on the tube. I don't have the dimensions handy but the WBRR body is at least 76" long. You lose a bit of length in the tube once the ends are gathered together with the drawstring.

    Cool, I like it.

Our set of Lazy Slugs saved us last Summer when we needed a speedy exit from our site. Your test version would be better for my RR. SLUGS sure enabled me to easily grab and go, in record time.

I like this. I was thinking about getting a set of Lazy Slugs for my WBRR but I like the single tube idea better.
On take down I've been rolling my hammock, TQ, and UQ into one giant ball and stuffing it into the bottom of my pack.
