Finally spent a few nights (2) over the ground and, as I hoped - I love it! Conditions permitting, I don't think I'll go to ground for a long, long while.
I actually planned to only hang on this trip during the day and to sleep in a tent at night. But when my friend with the borrowed tent discovered it was missing a pole - at the camp site - I happily changed my mind.
Setup:
-HH Deep Jungle XL hammock w/ Dutchware whoopie slings
-HH silnylon hex tarp w/continuous ridgeline with Reflect-it, a Stinger, and two prusik knot loops all courtesy of Dutchware
Huge thank you to this community as a whole, as the many hours I've now spent reading these forums and being steered to hammock videos really paid off! I was comfortable with knots I didn't know how to tie just 1 month ago, setup my rig quickly, and helped keep my friend's tent up without a pole
I was most concerned about being cold, as it got down to right around 0 degrees C and I was going to try sleeping with my neoair pad as my bottom insulation. Besides cold feet when I woke up (they had slipped off the pad), I was pleasantly surprised with how warm I stayed. Another aspect I quickly valued was how easy it is to slip on the camp shoes and take a leak at 3 am.
And finally, the best part of the experience was staying dry. A storm blew during the second night, and I was thoroughly impressed that my tarp worked as hoped. My friends in the roughed up tent couldn't day say the same

And oh yeah, in all my hammock excitement I almost forgot... I got to see the Grand Canyon too!
