If you are going the DIY route, check out BIAS (BUTT IN A SLING) They have the best price on the 1 inch polyester webbing. I use the webbing for my suspension. I go this route since I have to come up with 6 to 10 hammocks. More hammocks equals more fun.

Polyester webbing slings are right choice when you lift polished loads. These slings are high strength and light materials. So, they do not create any scratches. For many outdoor uses, the polyester slings are more preferred.

Stay away from nylon webbing. Far too much stretch for most hammock uses.

I have some polypro straps I like, but they are probably twice as thick as the polyester straps I also have and use. Fine for car camping, and in the backyard, but polyester goes in my backpack.

+1 on that. Nylon webbing is super-strong but way too stretchy.

I personally use Dutch's lightweight polypro/dyneema straps when I'm backpacking and somewhat heavier polyester straps whenever weight isn't a concern. Strapworks created an excellent reference page to compare the features of different types of webbing.
