Canada > Ont > EGL Winter 2017 - Gearing Up and Backcountry Hangs

EGL Winter 2017 Line Up: "Gearing Up" and "Backcountry" Hangs

Before everyone gets wrapped up in the holiday season I wanted to put out an open invitation to all to join us on our annual "Gearing Up for Winter" at Valens Conservation Area north of Hamilton and for our Winter Back-country Hang on Crown land just southwest of Algonquin Park, both in Ontario. Over the years, Valens been a great chance to first meet up with old friends, make some new ones, compare gadgets and most importantly, eat like royalty. And to work off those extra pounds, we put that gear to the test in the field where this year I even hope to get some ice fishing in for speckled trout.

While the dates aren't carved in ice yet, and the actual date of the Backcountry Hang will be dependent upon ice conditions on site, let's tentatively say.

    • Gearing Up: Jan 6-8, 2017 (Alternate Jan 13-15, 2017) - Food/Drink and Good Company
    • Backcountry: Feb 3-5, 2017 (early arrivals on Thurs 2nd) - All of the above plus ice fishing for specks.

So I hope that everyone has a joyous and safe holiday season and look forward to seeing you out there, freezing your *** off alongside the rest of us!

    Happy Holidays!

Ahhh the winter hangs! How I love them and will very much miss the hangs and all of you! I went to the Doctor yesterday and had an X-Ray done on my back. All was good but a bit freaky seeing the X-Ray with all the titanium screws.
I'm getting a bit cagey being stuck at the house. Doc repeated - Nothing but short walks for 2 more weeks and then maybe after that I can drive a little. He told me not to even think about shoveling snow. Yes, it's coming. This Friday is supposed to be 70* and then 2 days later SNOW!!! He doesn't want me screwing up all his work. LOL
So hopefully I'll be able to come up by March or so.
I am Sooooooo looking forward to getting back into those piney woods with y'all!

PS- I might even be looking to start a new build and create my first canoe. Yes that's right I said CANOE! I think I saw some plans for a 14ft cedar strip that would weight about 30lbs. If I'm going to go on any of these extensive portage trips, I'm going to need a canoe.
Hanging in the woods, paddlin and catching trout- My kind of living...

Alas Bonnet, that's unfortunate about your back; are those Dutch screws? Anyway, heal up and join us when you're able. You and your dutch oven are always welcome! (For those of you who weren't in Valens a while back, LuvmyBonnet made an awesome pot roast in his dutch oven. Mmmm.)

Also, if you do start building that canoe, take lots of pics along the way. I'd love to see the progress.

I'm in for one night at Valens. Still up in the air about the backcountry.

I've camped cold. Woke up to snow some mornings but never for any prolonged time under freezing. Also never ice fished. I would love to hit one or both of these. I better figure out a good underquilt situation. Has anyone in this group ever tried stacking a couple of lighter underquilts? Does it work ok?

I think the Feb 3-4 weekend will work for me if I stay on the same work schedule I'm on now. The Jan 14-15 weekend falls into that schedule for days off. I won't know for a couple of weeks tho.

Stacking UQ's works well. I've stacked 40 degree phoenix on top of my Jarbidge and staggered them a bit to make a full length quilt. Come to Valens. There will probably be extra equipment floating around and lots of generous and helpful happy to make sure you're warm.

Awesome. Thanks greaves. Valens sounds like a perfect first timer trip. I'm looking forward to it.
