What is it? Blustery cold and windy temps kept at bay with fire, friends, food, and feathers alongside the I&M Canal near McKinley Woods in Channahon, IL.
Trails are good for pulks
How do I get there? For those who are new and coming out for the first time, the site we frequent is like 3.2 miles from Channahon State Park, from the parking, lot, walk up to the trail by the lock tenders house, turn left, (kinda southwest direction), hike over the bridge, go thru the tunnel to a small parking lot, proceed through that onto the trail. it will be blacktop for about the first mile, then changes to crushed limestone, continue on the trail, pass up the bridge that takes you into McKinley woods, past the gazebo on the river, then watch for a take off from the trail that goes to the left, there is an old CCC 3 sided log shelter with a fire place, a brick pit outhouse, no water pump. there is a well pump in McKinley, . i always filter that well water before i drink it just to be on the safe side. there are several fire rings around the site if you don't want to use the one in the shelter. you can not leave your vehicle in McKinley woods over night, but Channahon is OK. Watch out for the raccoon s, they raid the trash can on a regular basis, the little darlings. there is a 6 dollar a night camping fee and no parking fee at Channahon state park. If you choose to bring a lot of gear or firewood, you can park in McKinley lower lot, bring stuff to the I&M site , then go back and move your vehicle to Channahon.
Food will be shared on Friday Night and Saturday Night potluck style. Bring a quantity that is reasonable as a side. There is always left overs. All other meals will be on your own.
Fees: $6/person/night. Bring cash, there is no one paying ahead of time. The ranger will find you (or not).
