    Calling all Georgia Folk

Especially those in the metro/north-metro area:

Where is the closest place, north of the ATL, one can go for a nice overnight hang? I'm in Marietta and so far the nearest place I've found is "The Pocket" near Dalton. Takes me a little over an hour. Unfortunately it's closed until April.

Feel free to PM me if you have a secret spot you don't want to make public. I promise I will keep confidence.

    Thanks neighbors!

Dockery closes in December and will reopen in April, but you can hang anywhere up the trail to the AT. I'm sure you can hang at Dockery anytime, if you can handle the cold. I'm hanging there this weekend.

Takes me nearly three hours to get to Cloudland Canyon. With these short days if we leave Friday afternoon at 3 (usually best case) then it's dark by the time we get there. I'd rather have a little daylight to set up camp, that's why I'm asking about closer areas.

Dockery looks doable, and other sites in that area, a little over an hour from me. The AT runs through Woody Gap on Hwy 60 nearby there too, so that's a plus.

The further east/northeast a place is it adds to my travel time as well from NW of Atlanta, so Raven Cliffs (currently closed due to fire) is out and other great spots over near the Helen area, although I love going there when time permits.

Cooper's Creek might work, I'll have to check out Jones Creek.

    Thanks guys- anywhere else?

Check out Bear Creek Trail and Loop just west of Ellijay. Great area and good trail that also ties into the Pinhoti.

I was at Duke's Creek last weekend and had a great time. Beautiful area, and near Yonah Mountain as well.

If the campground at Dockery Lake is full, you can hike up Dockery Lake Trail and fish several established campsites. Some of them are not very far from the TH.

Lake Russell, just outside Cornelia, is part of the Chattahoochee NF and is about the furthest south. The are 2 loops for camping, one mostly for RVs and one for tents and hammocks. The tent loop has a decent area in the middle of the loop for a family or group. If I remember correctly, the outhouse in the loop has running water and power. Don't know about the amenities (electric, etc.) in the actual sites.

Give jones a try it's a good spot that you can be at within 30 minutes from downtown Dahlonega. IMO it's a much better spot than Coopers Creek. The spots are more spread out and most sit right on the creek. They also have metal fire rings. There is also some spots of Rock Creek Road right off of 60 just south west of Coopers Creek. Didn't realize raven cliff was closed now we were just there two weeks ago.

What about lake Altoona is there anything up there?
