The trip that made me think..Goodbye Tents.

Maybe not for this forum but.. Five knee surgeries and a steep hill to the camp site made me think of Hammocks. Two month later a WBBB XLC showed up on my doorstep.

So far..only 6-8 nights in a tent this year (family trips). My knees are still good after about 20 trips. The summer backpack is a lot lighter and I do not feel the same knee pain after a trip. The pack weight during the winter is almost the same but..the trips are often shorter.

Gear: Hilleberg Unna, Therm-a-Rest® NeoAir and a cheep Aegismax blue sleeping bag.

    The Camp site:

<knock on wood> I've never suffered from chronic knee problems so i can't imagine- just the thought of sleeping on the cold hard ground was enough to convince me to hammock!

Knee problems is not funny at all :-(. The surgeries has fixed some of my injuries but the long mountain hikes I did before has to wait until my boy can carry the gear :-)

    Great pics!

I like the sunrise where you see the reflection of the sun but not the sun itself.

It wasn't necessarily a specific trip. Where I hike in Kentucky, flat ground for a tent can be hard to come by. I've never had to search too far for 2 suitable trees. That first night's sleep in a hammock, and I knew I was hooked. Plus, I love the "tinker-factor" of the hammock. Mods are part of the fun!

I quit laying on the ground 30 years ago and actually stopped camping for many years because I couldn't take the ground with backpacking equipment. The hammock was a God send to me as it allowed me to get back in the woods where I belong.

...and I don't understand why it took me so long to try a hammock. It's like starting over again :-)

Same here I been backpacking since the 70's and when I was young it was not so bad but as I got older I would tent camp on a cot and do one nighters out and back to the cot.

Herd about the new cottage vendors and larger hammocks and have never looked back I use a RR and a XLC and love them both .

Just a note, knee overextension is a very real possibility in a hammock depending on fit. If you do experience knee discomfort in your hammock, consider putting a pillow, jacket, or something under your knees to relieve the pressure.

    Cheers!
