I dont know if there is a fire ring close to the trailhead. In regards to fire rings the Dispersed Recreation Policy states: "Do not leave campfires unattended. Thoroughly extinguish campfires before leaving your campsite" and that "excavations are limited to those required to make safe campfire rings and sanitary pit toilets. Any excavation will be re-leveled prior to vacating your campsite." So it seems this is allowed.

The site brochure lists LNT principles including "Minimize campfire impacts".

I spoke with Allegheny Site Management and even though it is closed, as long as you bring your own provisions you CAN camp at the boat access campground. The road is not open and the site is only accessible by snow mobile or hike in hike out. Sorry for any confusion.

Meerkat, I just noticed your from Steubenville. I grew up in Wintersville, and lived up by the mall for a while until we moved to PA. Small world.

I added myself to the sign up sheet. I won't be able to make it up until Saturday morning. My 6 nights away for bear camp is still fresh in my wife's mind, so I only got a 1 night pass. We have 6 kids (ages 10,9,7,5,3,1) and it is a lot of work to take care of them by yourself.

Stopped by the trail head Saturday on my way through from backpacking along the NCT. The parking lot is being plowed and in good shape. I was surprised by this as in past it was not. I can see that the cross country skiing trail is being used off to one end of the lot and that's probably a good draw.

I hiked down the Morrison trail and folks have been using it so the path was broken. Off trail the snow was nearly to my knees. Of course that was before the last two days of rain No sign of fire rings near the lot but I have used rings located down stream that may still be there. Bye the way, the stream is flowing nice so plenty of water.
