    Regarding "W" whipping....

Greetin's all.....I was looking at Just Jeff's site http://tothewoods.net/HomemadeHammock2.html this morning and saw mentioned the "W" whipping. Has anyone here in the group tried this method? It sounds like that it may help relieve a sore knees. Sometimes I have a sore right knee issue when laying in my hammock, kinda feels over extended--left knee doesn't seem to be bothered. I'll stuff something under it and that will help or I do the figure four if that's the correct term. I was just curious if it's worth messing with. Thanks

For a couple of hammocks I did the W whipping, on the foot end only. Broke the width into 4 sections, and deeper cut into inner corners by 6 inches. This seemed to create a shape I will loosely call a flat bottom boat, it seemed to do OK on a couple... I then started going wider and longer, and kind of gave up on it. HYOH.
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

Hey Aardvark. Thanks for the reply. The fact that on some of your hammocks doing the W-whipping seemed to do OK suggests to me that it would be worth trying out. My whipped hammy is shorter than my gathered end hammy and I'm kinda liking the shorter one.... maybe I'll modify the gathered end one doing the W-whipping on just the foot end. I realize my question could be answered many ways but you summed it up...HYOH (I won't know until I try it). Have a good Monday.

I played around a lot with whipping, and honestly don't feel like it ever made a significant difference. I'd guess the shaping Aardvark is talking about is more impacting than the whipping method.

Honestly, length and how you hang it will probably have a bigger impact. You might try a longer hammock, or hanging the hammock with a little less sag (and thus laying at less of a diagonal). Raising the foot end more could possibly help also. But FWIW it s free to try changing the whipping, if you want to play with it.

Get you a couple of blanks from tableclothsfactory.com for cheap and play with the whipping method.

You can also get different lengths and widths to try.

I still use mine as my main hammock- love it!

Hey Boston and JohnsPenn....tnx for the replies and suggestions. Well I already have a longer and possibly wider hammock with the first one I made. The second, smaller hammock is the first one that I whipped. I'm getting a pretty flat lay for the most part with both. Something that I just thought of is maybe the right knee was strained from hiking. I did forget to take my knee brace last Tuesday. Anyway, I don't have a problem with messing with the whipping. In fact when I do get around to messing with the W-whipping I'll be trying it on the gathered end one. Whipping the foot end will shorten it so I can try lengths in-between what I have now. I usually try and have the foot end higher than the head end and I've messed with srl length too. With my second DIY hammock I tried it without a srl and that too felt pretty good. I'll find something that feels good. The tablecloth blanks sound interesting. Thanks again you guys.

I whipped my most recent hammock with a W and find it more comfortable than a classic V. That being said it is a VERY long hammock and I'm equally comfortable in my shorter hammock without the W. play with it and find what you like for the hammock you have.

We custom whip each hammock using the W method. We take a best guess, then have the user (ok, relative or friend) lay in the hammock and adjust as needed.

The fastest way to test a bunch of changes to the W is using the double sheet bend on the W fold.

The W helps with floppy sides especially with the larger, wider tablecloth hammocks. It allows you to approximate a curved end to your hammock blank without cutting fabric.

After you find a W method that is to your liking, you can fold it and ball whip it.
